Numbers are everywhere in daily life - from shopping and telling time to giving your phone number. Mastering Japanese numbers early will boost your confidence and practical communication skills!
## Basic Numbers 1-10
Let's start with the fundamentals. Japanese has two number systems: the native Japanese system (ใฒใจใคใใตใใค) and the Chinese-derived system (ใใกใใซ). The Chinese system is more commonly used for counting.
### Numbers 1-10 (Chinese System)
1. **ไธ** (ใใก) - ichi
2. **ไบ** (ใซ) - ni
3. **ไธ** (ใใ) - san
4. **ๅ** (ใ/ใใ) - shi/yon
5. **ไบ** (ใ) - go
6. **ๅ
ญ** (ใใ) - roku
7. **ไธ** (ใใก/ใชใช) - shichi/nana
8. **ๅ
ซ** (ใฏใก) - hachi
9. **ไน** (ใใ
ใ/ใ) - kyuu/ku
10. **ๅ** (ใใ
ใ) - juu
### Important Notes on 4, 7, and 9
The numbers 4, 7, and 9 have two readings each:
- **4**: ใ (shi) or ใใ (yon) - Use ใใ more often as ใ sounds like "death" (ๆญป)
- **7**: ใใก (shichi) or ใชใช (nana) - Both are common
- **9**: ใใ
ใ (kyuu) or ใ (ku) - ใใ
ใ is more common
## Numbers 11-99
Once you know 1-10, larger numbers follow a logical pattern!
### Numbers 11-19
Simply combine ๅ (juu) + the second digit:
### Numbers 20-99
For multiples of 10, use: number + ๅ (juu)
For other numbers, combine: tens + ones
- 25 = ไบๅไบ (ใซใใ
ใใ) - ni juu go
- 38 = ไธๅๅ
ซ (ใใใใ
ใใฏใก) - san juu hachi
- 76 = ไธๅๅ
ญ (ใชใชใใ
ใใใ) - nana juu roku
## Numbers 100-9999
### Hundreds
100 = **็พ** (ใฒใใ) - hyaku
**Special pronunciations:**
- 300 = ไธ็พ (ใใ**ใณใใ**) - san byaku
- 600 = ๅ
ญ็พ (ใใฃ**ใดใใ**) - roppyaku
- 800 = ๅ
ซ็พ (ใฏใฃ**ใดใใ**) - happyaku
Examples:
- 150 = ็พไบๅ (ใฒใใใใใ
ใ)
- 256 = ไบ็พไบๅๅ
ญ (ใซใฒใใใใใ
ใใใ)
- 999 = ไน็พไนๅไน (ใใ
ใใฒใใใใ
ใใใ
ใใใ
ใ)
### Thousands
1000 = **ๅ** (ใใ) - sen
**Special pronunciations:**
- 3000 = ไธๅ (ใใ**ใใ**) - san zen
- 8000 = ๅ
ซๅ (ใฏใฃ**ใใ**) - hassen
## Large Numbers
Japanese groups numbers by 10,000s (ไธ), not 1,000s like English!
### Important Large Numbers
- **ไธ** (ใพใ) - man = 10,000
- **ๅไธ** (ใใ
ใใพใ) - juu man = 100,000
- **็พไธ** (ใฒใใใพใ) - hyaku man = 1,000,000
- **ๅไธ** (ใใใพใ) - sen man = 10,000,000
- **ๅ** (ใใ) - oku = 100,000,000
Examples:
- 15,000 = ไธไธไบๅ (ใใกใพใใใใ)
- 250,000 = ไบๅไบไธ (ใซใใ
ใใใพใ)
- 3,000,000 = ไธ็พไธ (ใใใณใใใพใ)
## Essential Counter Words

### ๅ (ko) - General Objects
Used for small, round objects or when unsure:

- 4ๆ = **ใใ** (yo ji) - 4 o'clock
- 7ๆ = **ใใกใ** (shichi ji) - 7 o'clock
